We believe, as a public institution based in the heart of Hillingdon, that we should employ our facilities and utilise the expertise and skills of our staff and students to make a positive impact in the local community. We run a number of initiatives and projects in Hillingdon and are always looking for new ways to meet community needs and contribute to the community.
If you have any ideas or suggestions for new community projects please email firstname.lastname@example.org
Our staff and students at Brunel undertake a wide variety of activities within the local community. Last year Brunel Volunteers offered 22,000 hours of service to good causes in Hillingdon through our volunteering scheme.
Brunel Volunteers works with over 80 local charities and schools. Volunteer activities include fundraising, mentoring, befriending, marketing and stewarding to name a few. As well as organising high-profile community events such as Good Deed Day and #thecolourdash.
On the University's 50th anniversary year Brunel Volunteers organised and hosted Hillingdon’s first ever #colourdash. A 5K charity colour run which raised £23,000 for the Michael Sobell Hospice.
If you would like to get involved with our volunteering scheme or are in need of volunteers Please visit the volunteers website or email Nancy.Rawlings@brunel.ac.uk
Brunel Good Neighbour Award
The Brunel Good Neighbour Award was set up in 2012 to recognise and reward courteous and considerate students living in Hillingdon. Local residents can nominate students who they feel have had a positive impact on their street.
Hillingdon Literary Festival
Hillingdon Literary Festival
Returning every October – in partnership with Arts Council England, London Borough of Hillingdon and Waterstones – the Hillingdon Literary Festival is a FREE weekend of readings, workshops, performances and debates aimed at Hillingdon residents of all ages, providing the community with the opportunity to engage with leading authors in the literary world.
Speakers have included Benjamin Zephaniah, Kate Mosse, Matt Haig, Shappi Khorsandi, Deborah Moggach, Will Self, Tessa Hadley, Jonathan Coe and many more. If you would like to find out more about the Hillingdon Literary Festival please visit the website by clicking here.
Organised by the Union of Brunel Students, the successful SSHH Bus (Silent Students, Happy Homes) was established in response to requests by local residents to reduce the noise from students on their way back either from the Student Union or Town Centre on Wednesday and Friday nights.
Raise and Give (RAG) is an initiative set up by the Union of Brunel Students which helps students get involved in raising money for charity. This has been done in the past through various events and activities which offers every single student the chance to raise money for great causes. Students nominate charities at the beginning of every year and the final decision of which charities will be involved is finalised by the RAG committee. If you would like to know more about this scheme please click here.
#Brunelhelps is an online portal for residents to submit non-financial support requests to us. The University is such a big place and we realise that it is hard to know where to start if you want Brunel to help you. If you would like to make an enquiry please click here.
For the past nine years Brunel has hosted the annual bonfire and fireworks night for Hillingdon. Last year around 6,000 students, staff and local residents from across the Borough attended the spectacular event. As well as lighting up the sky, the event is filled with fun family activities for all ages, including food stalls, entertainment provided by our students, bouncy castles and so much more.
